Pain 8 weeks post surgery for breast cancer

Hi.

just wondered if someone could advise about pain 8weeks post surgery for breast cancer.

ive had pain since surgery under my arm… but the pain in the last week has become bad in my breast and deep under my nipple..

these are sharp stabbing pains, can happen just once, but generally happens multiple times.

i spoke to my MacMillan nurse on Friday and said it sounds like delayed nerve damage… and told me that I could see my GP for strong, long term pain relief.

is this pain normal?
im going to call my gp tomorrow, but just really concerned.

there is no swelling or signs of any infection.

hope someone can help.

  • Dear Pen1 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the surgery you had a couple of months back and the pain you are experiencing. Glad to see you are seeing your doctor about this and I hope this appointment goes well.

As your Macmillan nurse has already said to you the nerves and tissues around the breast can be injured during this type of surgery and unfortunately this isn't that uncommon. Pain relief can help if it is very uncomfortable but it is also important to carry out some exercise that the breast care nurses or a physiotherapy can show you. This usually eases with time but it can take a while and in some cases is a long term affect of treatment.

Breast cancer now has a section of information about ongoing pain after breast surgery you may find useful to read.

I hope things start to improve for you soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Naomi
