Eating properly

I have just had a operation for prostate cancer and in recovery mode two weeks ago and really struggling with food and what to eat.

And everything tastes salty and leaves my mouth dry and salty

Is this normal and can you advise what I need to do to improve what I am having etc.

  • Hi Fulford and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your recent operation and that you are struggling to eat with a salty taste in your mouth.

Sometimes the anaesthetic itself can cause an unpleasant taste in the mouth and this can be ongoing for several weeks. Do mention it to your doctor or nurse the next time you speak to them or if this gets worse, or you notice any other symptoms.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, sucking on sugar free gum or mints can also help.

If you don't have much of an appetite it may be worth trying eating little and often rather than 3 larger meals during the day. Try and go for foods you fancy but try and avoid fatty, spicy or salty foods. Hopefully by trying different things you can work out what works and doesn't work for you. If you can also include some fruit and veg and lean protein this will all help the body to heal and repair itself.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
