Radiotherapy

My husband is due to start radiotherapy this week for prostate cancer  - he is also on hormone treatment. He catheterises twice a day I understand the therapy may cause soreness when urinating and I am worried this may make it very painful to use a catheter. I would be interested if any one going or been through this can comment- thankyou

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husbands situation. You have posted on the ask the nurses section and whilst anyone can comment on here you may get more responses about other patients experiences posting on a different thread.

We have some information about possible side effects from radiotherapy to the prostate on our website. Whilst the radiotherapy treatment is targeted to the actual tumour site to minimise the healthy tissues surrounding it there can still be some side effects to nearby organs. This can include some urinary side effects but how this will impact your husband and his self catheterisation we cannot say.

I would encourage your husband to speak with his team about this, although I am sure they will assess him throughout his treatment to manage any side effects he may experience to best manage these.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes to you both

    Naomi
