Urgent referral for skin cancer

Hi,

I have two large brown marks on my face - one for at least 2 years (looking at my photos) and one for about a year.   I assumed they were sun or age spots.  I recently noticed one  had a raised area so went to the GP.   She said she would refer me to the dermatologist "to be on the safe side although it doesn't look sinister".  That was Friday afternoon.   By Tuesday morning I had the appointment and the dermatologist whisked me in immediately for two punch biopsies  ("to be on the safe side").    Looking at my online notes, I have discovered the GP suspects an SCC and it was an 'Urgent suspected cancer referral' so not "not sinister" at all.       I am told there will be a 4-6 weeks wait for results.

I have spent hours since then examining photos online of different cancers, driving myself mad.   I already suffer from anxiety and am thinking ahead to funeral plans!

My question is, because the marks have been there so long, is it more likely to have spread if it is a melanoma and not an SCC?

Many many thanks for all you all do at Cancer Research for people like me.

  • Hello Melanie and thank you for contacting us.

Unfortunately, I do not know whether there is a likelihood of spread as we also do not know yet what may be going on for you.

Until those cells are examined under a microscope no one will know what they are, but it is not unusual for people who do not have cancer to be referred under the cancer pathway.

Waiting for results can be incredibly hard, we can read into things and research things during that time that can easily make us feel worse. Try if you can to keep yourself busy and put cancer out of your mind, but I appreciate this is easier said than done.

Take care Melanie, and if you want to talk things over with a nurse the helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
