Food during chemo

Hi My mum is 82 and currently on her second round of chemotherapy. Week 1 and we are struggling  with food any advice would be appreciated

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand your concern regarding your mum's current situation. Do let her hospital team know so they can monitor this. They may change her anti sickness medication for example. It is important to take this medication for a few days after chemotherapy, even if no nausea is experienced. You can ask for a referral to the hospital dietician service as well.

It can be difficult to motivate someone to eat, sometimes doctors can prescribe a very low daily dose of steroids to stimulate appetite. It is worth trying a small amount of alcohol, such as a stout, small measure of sherry/spirits, as this can increase appetite. Obviously check this is ok first with her GP.

The UK charity, Macmillan Cancer Support, have an online resource called the 'Building Up Diet', which has handy tips to help someone with a poor appetite. They also have meal ideas

We have a website section on diet problems which may be useful.

    I hope this helps,
