growth on big toe

My sister has a really unpleasant growth on her big toenail.  It's grown through her nail, looks constantly infected (weeping and bleeding and smelly) and the toe is swollen and sore.

She has been told that it is an osteochondroma and has been told she will have to wait for at least six months for any surgery or treatment.

My sister had breast cancer aged 37 and my grandmother had a sarcoma. I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer.

What more can my sister do to get someone to take her seriously?

  • Hello Tan-Dove and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and also your sister's situation. It does sound like you all have a lot on your plate at the moment.

It is difficult without being involved in your sister's care to get the full picture. I am sorry to hear about your sister's long wait for treatment.

I am not sure whether it would be possible for your GP to assess the toe particularly as it is causing her so many problems and see if they can communicate with the hospital about the problems that she is having with her toe and try and move the appointment to an earlier date.

I am not sure where you are living in the UK but I wonder whether she could be referred to another hospital if she can't be seen at an earlier date.

You could also encourage your sister to speak to the secretary at the hospital to let them know about the problems she is having.

I do wish you all the best for your treatment and hope that your sister is able to be seen at an earlier date.

If you or your sister would like to talk through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
