Leaking brown sludge from anus

I had anal cancer three years ago with a complete response.I have a colostomy which I manage well.Yesterday I had cramps in my stomach area and passed mucus from my anus .it went on for most of the day .It also was a brown colour and sludgy. Is this normal .should I contact Colo rectal nurses.?

  • Hi Snowhite31 and thank you for your post,

If you are concerned, contact the colorectal nurses or your specialist or GP as they know your situation, particularly if this is a new symptom that persists. It doesn't mean it is because of anything serious but it is best to be safe and get yourself checked.

It isn't unusual to have mucus pass from the anus after a colostomy and this is something that can occur sporadically. The bowel lining continues to produce mucus even though it no longer serves any purpose.

Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
