My FIT test was 288 does that mean I have cancer
Hello Sonnie and thanks for your post
I'm sorry you are worried about a positive bowel ( FIT) test result
The FIT test is able to check for blood in the stools, when there are high levels of blood found further tests are usually needed to find out more. There can be many reasons for blood in the stools and a range of bowel conditions that can cause the bleeding but something more serious such as cancer does need to be ruled out.
A colonoscopy (a camera to examine the bowel) is usually the next test following a positive FIT to be able to take a look at the bowel more closely to identify any abnormal areas that may be responsible for the blood.
The health professionals involved will go through what is going to happen next and what to expect. Do ask them any questions you may have but do realise until they have carried out further tests there may be little else they can say, for now.
I hope everything turns out to be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Best wishes,
Celene
