Change of cancer type

I was previously told that I had grade 2 invasive ductal breast cancer and my tumour was 2.5cm. I had a lumpectomy 4 weeks ago and the pathology results say that I have lobular carcinoma and it has been found in my lymph nodes. The tumour was also 4cm in size.

i have been referred to an oncologist for treatment talks and have to get an MRI scan to see if it is anywhere else.

Is this type of cancer more serious than the invasive ductal? It was a lot to take in. Not sure about the 5 year thing either.

  • Hi Dun123

I am sorry to learn of your situation. I can imagine this is a worrying time for you.

I am unable to tell you if your cancer is worse than invasive ductal as there are different  subtypes of lobular cancer, and prognosis depends on many factors, such as the grade  and stage of the cancer, and how well you respond to treatment; much more than what type of cancer. When your hospital specialist has all the results from the biopsy and scans they will be in a better position to answer your question.   It would be worth talking things through with either your breast care nurse or breast specialist as they know your situation.

We have more  information on invasive lobular breast cancer on our website.  You may also find it helpful to look at the  Lobular Breast Cancer UK website which has personal stories of people diagnosed with lobular breast cancer and campaigns for better information and research into this cancer.

There is a lot to process when diagnosed with cancer. It may be helpful to take someone with you to your appointments. Also, it can be useful to write down any questions that come to mind before your appointment.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
