Fungating Tumor with CUP

On reading about life expectancy with fungating wounds why do they only give a 6 to 12 months?

A loved one of mine has CUP and has a massive fungating wound to the right hip which currently its only being redressed. Chemo has stopped recently because they say that it will make the wound worse and communication with our local oncology department has been poor, could someone give some advice please?

  • Hello Moni and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to hear about your loved one. Dealing with both cancer and a fungating wound is hard.

Unfortunately, it is difficult for doctors to know how to treat CUP as it is not clear where the cancer cells have started from. This means they don't know what treatments may work best. When there is also a wound involved this complicates things as chemotherapy can cause it to break down further.

It might be that your loved one needs to talk through this with their doctor or specialist nurse (CNS) so they understand better where things are at.  Sometimes a palliative care team will be referred to, to help with any symptoms and support the district nurses doing the dressings.

Take care and it may help you further to talk this through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
