Appointment delay

My husband has been told he has an 8cm cancerous mass in his kidney. A scan showed it hasn’t spread. The doctor rang last week to say he’d have a meeting with all departments concerned to formulate a treatment plan which will include removal of the kidney. I rang the hospital yesterday as we hadn’t heard anything since last week and was told the meeting would be either next week or the week after. I’m very worried as this seems too long. At present the cancer hasn’t spread but that could change while we wait. I cannot get to speak to the doctor. I just don’t know what to do….

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband's situation.

The doctors are probably waiting for a large formal meeting called an MDT (Multi disciplinary Team) meeting where all the doctors involved in your husband's care meet to discuss how he should be treated. A lot of these MDT lists are long and complex and doctors spend a long time discussing each individual patient working out the best possible treatment plan.

They need to make sure that they give enough  time to discuss each patient and some of these meetings over run and the patients that have not been discussed are put on the next list the following week.

These meetings only happen once a week. Until this meeting has happened the doctors will probably not be able to tell you much more as they will be waiting to discuss any tests that he has had done with his colleagues.

I know that it is unsettling waiting but I am sure that a week will not make much difference.

In the meantime if you or your husband would like to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
