Skin worry

Hi I have been referred to my local hospital tumour screening clinic after my GP sent photos to the hospital dermatologist regarding a sore on my cheek that will not heal up (I have had this for over 4 months now) and a suspicious mole on my back.My concern is that the appointment is not untill March next year is that normal?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have some skin and mole changes that need looking at further. Unfortunately there are long waits in particular for dermatology ( skin specialist) appointments at the moment.

Having said that if your GP has referred you on the suspected cancer pathway ( and I would double check with your surgery) we would expect you to be seen initially much sooner.

There are situations where a dermatologist will review the photographs and referrals coming through and prioritise according to urgency. So I am not sure if this is what has happened in your case and therefore your referral may have been downgraded to less urgent.

As I say this is something that either the dermatology clinic or your GP should be able to tell you.

I hope this helps and that you know more very soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
