Diet for someone with colon tumour

This afternoon, my brother was told that he has a tumour in his large intestine, blocking the passage of food.  I am concerned that he is losing weight rather fast. What food can I given him? Most of the online advice is for after surgery and not for his stage. We will try to see his GP next week as soon as we can get an appointment. Shall we ask the GP or the consultant?

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hello sarahsp and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your brother's situation, this must be a difficult time for you both.

The extent of how much the tumour is blocking your brothers bowel will affect what he can and can't eat. He also may be suffering with other symptoms that means he doesn't have the appetite to eat or may be feeling full and or nauseous with it as well.

Ideally it would be best to speak with his own specialist team ( his specialist nurse) if he has one, to ask about the best diet for him.

In the meantime if your brother has a partial obstruction it is normally best to eat a lower in fibre diet of small portions every few hours rather than a larger breakfast, lunch or dinner. Some people find it easier and more comfortable to digest more fluids or soft foods. Foods or drinks higher in calories is one way of trying to combat some of the weight loss, but at times like this can be difficult to maintain.

The hospital may have a dietician who your brother can be referred to but there is also the cancer and nutrition helpline manned by dieticians for cancer patients run by the world cancer research fund.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Wishing you and your brother all the best

    Naomi
