Cervical cancer

Hello, thank you for this group.

On 10 Aug I had open myomectomy to remove a 12cm fibroid (following 6 pregnancy losses) and LETZ to treat HPV and subsequent CIN2-3. Everything was biopsied and at my follow-up yesterday I was informed that they had found

In addition to the CIN 3 , there are two foci of grade 1 squamous cell carcinoma. The carcinoma has a depth of invasion of less than 1mm. The maximum horizontal diamension is 2mm. The carcinoma is 1.5mm from the deep margin,15mm from the ectocervical margin and 9 mm from the radial endocervical margin. There is no evidence of lymphovascular space invasion. p16 immunostain will be requested to assess association with HR HPV

I am being offered either a hysterectomy (going through the open myomectomy incision) or trachelectomy - my head says to just take everything out and give up on a second child but heart says to go for the trachelectomy. I’m just not clear if one treatment is useuaklt more successful than the other. Thanks for any guidance on the different treatment options.

  • Hello Maeve79 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate how difficult it can be making treatment decisions.

A hysterectomy is the most commonly used surgery for early stage cervical cancer. However other surgical options such as a trachelectomy may be offered when a woman would still like to have further pregnancies.

There is more information about surgery for cervical cancer on our website, so do take a look.

Unfortunately no one here can say what you should do and you really do need to ask your team directly the risks and benefits for both procedures. This will then hopefully help you make up your mind.

It sounds like this has been picked up at an early stage which is good, therefore the aim of any treatment will be to successfully remove all the cancer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
