Face and hair treatments after completing radiotherapy

I had a lumpectomy a couple of months ago and have just finished a week of radiotherpay for breast cancer.

I wondered when I can start to get facial treatments again and whether it is ok to get my hair highlighted?

I'm also on lectrazole for 5 years and think my hair is shredding at a quicker rate than usual - will this slow down or is this a side effect that I need to accept?

Thank you!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent treatment and appreciate you wanting to know when you can start having some hair and skincare treatments.

Firstly it isn't unusual to experience some hair thinning with a hormone therapy such as tamoxifen. This will normally continue whilst on the treatment but doesn't usually cause hair loss that is noticeable to other people.

It should be fine to have your hair highlighted as you haven't had chemotherapy. However do mention the treatment you have had and are currently on, alongside any concerns you have about your hair to your hairdresser.

Likewise a facial should be also okay to have but perhaps leave it a few weeks as you have only finished the radiotherapy quite recently. Once again the beautician carrying this out will want to know about the treatments you have had to make sure any products they use are suitable for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
