Breast cancer

I have a lump in my breast and i am refered to the breast clinic for more invvestigatios .. am worried

  • Hello Sarah.12 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are having investigations for a breast lump. I can understand that finding a lump can be unsettling.

The majority of women referred to breast clinics don't have cancer so try not to overthink it for now.

The charity Breast Cancer Now have produced some information about what to expect at a breast clinic

Breast Care nurses are aware that the breast clinic can be a scary place and I am sure will put you at ease.

Depending on your age you will have a breast examination and an ultrasound and maybe a mammogram. The mammogram is not always used in younger women as the images don't show up as clearly as in older women.

If the doctor or breast nurse identifies an area that needs further examination then they may take a biopsy. This will need to be looked at by a pathologist under a microscope to confirm if there are any concerning features.

You may find it helpful to take someone with you as there can be a bit of a wait between seeing the nurse and the doctor and breast clinics are extremely busy places.

If you would like to talk things over at any stage either before are after your appointment you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I do hope your appointment goes well.

    All the best,

    Catherine
