DPYD test

My mum has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Pancreatic that's spread to multiple organs. I went to her appointment with her the other day and they have done a DPYD test and the consultant said that depending on how it comes back would depend if she's given 50% or 100% strength with the chemo. Now we know the chemo isn't going to cure her and is just to make her comfortable. What will the difference be of recieving 50% or 100% will this lower her time with us if she can't have full strength?

  • Hello KAB and thank you for posting. I am sorry to hear about what is happening with your mum. This must be a very difficult time for you all.

Unfortunately, I can not say exactly what might happen with Mum. Her hospital team who are in charge of her care are best placed to comment on this. However, what I can say is that those with DPD deficiency have no choice but to have a lower dose of chemotherapy as having a 100% dose could be dangerous.

When deciding treatment for patients doctors have to always weigh up the benefits and risks, to get the best outcome for each patient. Quality of life as well as quantity is essential.

Take care KAB and I hope you all have support at this time.
