Suspected bowel cancer

Hi just wanting to find out I recently seen a GP for blood in poo and have been referred for possible bowel cancer. Today received a appointment within 14days to have a telephone appointment is this normal with a doctor before anything is looked at further? I was hoping to physically go to the hospital to see someone or have tests arranged.

  • Hi Sallyp42,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

This is just to let you know that the nurses are next back in the office on Tuesday morning, due to the bank holiday, so they will be able to get back to you then.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It can be a worry to notice bowel changes and to have blood in the poo but there can be many reasons for this to happen, other than cancer.

Anyone found to have a positive FIT test ( poo sample looking for blood) will be referred to the hospital for possible further tests. However most people will have a phone call first to ask about any other symptoms and so on before booking the most appropriate tests.

Often a colonoscopy will be arranged which is where a camera is passed into the bowel to take a look at what may be causing the bleeding and any other unusual symptoms that may be going on.

Try and sit tight for now and do remember most people referred on a suspected cancer pathway won't go on to be diagnosed with cancer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
