What is meant by 'high'

Hello,

I have just had a call from my G.P, I gave a stool sample and he is now fast tracking me for a colonoscopy as the results came back 'high', what does that mean please? I had a partial nephrectomy for a stage 3 tumour in 2012 and the G.P said given my history he will be fast tracking my colonoscopy. I am quite worried about what this now means, I know that until we get the results there isn't anything that can be done, doesn't stop the worries though. Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are worried about a recent positive stool  test result.

This means blood has been found hidden in your poo sample but the test doesn't say what is causing the bleeding.

There can be many reasons for blood in the stools and a range of bowel conditions that can cause the bleeding but something more serious such as cancer does need to be ruled out.

colonoscopy (a camera to examine the bowel) is usually the next test following a positive result to take a look at the bowel more closely to identify any abnormal areas that may be responsible for the blood.  I see that your GP is arranging this for you.

I hope everything turns out to be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
