Cervical cancer diagnosis

Recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Had a PET scan yesterday. Will find out the results of this next week and we'll make a treatment plan.

My report said this:

"squamous cell carcinoma versus an aggressive expansile cin3 with exophytic growth pattern and features suggestive of early invasive squamous cell carcinoma"

Does anyone know what this means?

  • Hello Debs, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of early-stage cervical cancer, and I can understand your wanting to know more before your treatment plan meeting.

These results come from the pathology laboratory who examine the biopsies taken. The language used is very much terminology between doctors, so it isn't even wording that we as a nurse would use or always understand. But what I can say is that the cells removed show early-stage squamous cells (cervical cancer cells) as well as CIN 3 (abnormal cells). So this is not very different from what you have already been told. It is not unusual for cancer cells and abnormal cells to be found at the same time in this situation.

When you see your hospital team they will be able to explain this more and talk through your treatment options. For now, it is waiting for your appointment, which I appreciate can be difficult. If you need to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
