Hair Regrowth

Hi All,

I am at the stage where I now have hair growing back but there is a lot of grey hair. I am used to dying this but scared that I will compromise the hair growth if I do.

How can I firstly, ensure the best possible regrowth; and, secondly what supplements/vitamins should I take; and, thirdly if I do dye my hair what products should I use?

  • Hello Faz and thanks for posting

It isn't uncommon to want to colour greying hair when the hair starts to regrow after chemotherapy, but as you say it is important to be cautious to prevent damage to the new hair coming through as it often is more fragile for the first few months.

It is recommended that patients wait around 6 months before dying their hair. Unfortunately we cannot recommend specific products but we have some information about using hair dyes and treatments after chemotherapy on our website. Some patients speak with their hairdresser to see if they can recommend vegetable or henna colour that are thought to be more gentle on the hair and unlikely to cause damage.

Cancer hair care also have information about colouring hair around having chemotherapy and may also be able to help direct you further with this.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
