  • Hi zakaz

I am sorry to hear you are going through breast cancer treatment. I can appreciate this must be a difficult time for you.

The build up of fluid you describe is most probably a seroma.

A seroma is a buildup of fluid that can occur under the wound or in the armpit (axilla) following breast surgery. The fluid comes from small blood and lymph vessels that are injured during the surgery to remove breast tissue. As these vessels begin to heal, no more fluid accumulates, and the body gradually absorbs the seroma without requiring treatment.

If the seroma is large and causes discomfort or is causing pressure on the wound , the fluid can be drained using a fine needle.

I would speak to your breast care nurse for more advice.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
