Secondary liver cancer

Hi, my husband had a choroidal  melanoma in 2012, it was successful treated and after a reoccurrence in 2016 has been cancer free. He has been feeling unwell for the last couple of weeks, fatigue, bloating, pain in his right side moving to his shoulder. After a CT scan and a biopsy we got the devastating news that the cancer had metastasised to his liver. We were told there was no treatment. We literally cannot believe this as he is 57 and in general good health. Is there any advice you can give us, surely there has to be something available to help him?

  • Hello Coffeenut and thanks for the post

I am so sorry to hear about your husbands situation, this must be such a difficult time for you all.

Without being involved in his care we can't really say if there are treatment options suited to him. It is usually the MDT Multi Disciplinary Team at the hospital who discuss each patient and any relevant test results to determine what the options may be.

Whilst sadly there are times when there is nothing more that can be done, most people who find themselves in a similar position will ask for a second opinion. This is usually at a different hospital and there is more information on our website about this. You can either ask the hospital team or GP to refer him.

It is also worth asking about whether there are any clinical trials that your husband may be suited to. I think it is important to make sure that no stone has been left unturned at such a time as this.

We have a clinical trials database so do take a look. You can search by cancer type and treatment that will list the trials currently open. It is important to read through the entry requirements as these are needed in order to be accepted onto a trial. All patients wishing to join a trial will need a referral from their doctor which is why it is best to discuss this with your husbands specialist team and see what they have to say.

I really do hope there is something that can be done for your husband.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Wishing you both all the best
