Liver cancer

My dad has been told his liver cancer is treatable but not curable does this mean it's stage 4?

We are waiting for his appointment to find out stage, type and treatment.the tumour is 7cm and unable to operate due to where it is..he is 85 type 2 diabetic.

He also has blood cancer polycythemia vera ..incurable but treatable for years and has already had a mastectomy.

I just want to be prepared

Kind regards

Lisa

  • Dear Lisa,

I am sorry to hear about your dad.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what your dad's exact situation is as we are not involved in his care. A liver cancer that starts in the liver is called a primary liver cancer

or it can spread to the liver when it called a secondary liver cancer. This is when a secondary liver cancer can spread from a cancer that started somewhere else in the body.

Unfortunately surgery to remove the liver tumour isn't possible for many people with liver cancer. A team of doctors and other professionals discuss the best treatment and care for each individual patient. They are called a multidisciplinary team (MDT). The decisions are based upon the type and stage (size and extent) of cancer and how fit and well they are and if they have any other health conditions that may affect their treatment. His doctor may be considering chemotherapy or other treatments. Treatment is often aimed at controlling the liver cancer, or slowing down it's progress, and improving quality of life.

    I hope this helps,
