Can secondary breast cancer cause ankle pain at night

I had Breast cancer 5 years ago, now have throbbing, stabbing pain in ankle at night which is getting worse. Could this be secondary cancer?
I Went to doctors 2 weeks ago as pain started in my toe, doctor said possible arthritis and prescribed Naproxin. This hasn’t helped and now pain has spread to my ankle.
am I overreacting in thinking secondary cancer? I don’t want to waste doctors time but am worried.

  • Hello motherofboxes and thanks for the post

It is very natural to become worried about any symptoms being a sign of a recurrence following a cancer diagnosis, but thankfully most won't be.

However with any ongoing symptom it would be best if you arranged another appointment with a GP to let them know the medication isn't helping and the pain seems to be getting worse. They can reassess you and arrange some tests if needed to find out more.

Hopefully the doctor will arrange an xray or scan to put your mind at ease that nothing more serious is going on for you. Do let the GP know what you are most concerned about, they may be able to put your mind at ease.

I hope you get some answers soon and are able to get some peace of mind.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
