96 yr old mum with liver cancer

My 96 yr old mum has been diagnosed with a 10 cm tumour in liver, which came from her bowel cancer of ten years ! She has no treatment now and was given weeks to live, but she now seems to have plateaued, and is back eating again and although she's lost weight seems strong again is this normal and does it mean she will survive longer ? How long can she go with this tumour ? Thanks for your help x

  • Hello Petegill and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation although it sounds like she is doing okay at the moment.

Unfortunately no one can really say how long someone may live with advanced cancer that isn't being treated as everyone is different. Whilst a doctor may predict a time frame based on other patients in a similar situation, some will live far longer than this whereas others sadly may die much sooner than expected.

In my experience some patients may have a sudden improvement in health before their health starts to decline again. I think the best thing to do is take each day as it comes and whilst your mum is having good days to make the most of these.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
