T4a cancer of the bowel and part removal of colon

Hi I have been advised over telephone I have T4a cancer of the bowel and recently had an operation for colon part removal. What will treatment be and what is survival rate?

  • Hello Jon1965 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that there must be a lot to take on board.

T4 relates to the Tumour size

Treatment will be decided  on many different factors which will include whether the cancer has spread to any lymph nodes or any where else in the body. The doctors will also take in to account your general health and how you would cope with any treatment.

There are many different Tests on your bowel cancer which will look at mutations and any gene changes as this may reflect the type of treatment that you may be offered.

You can look at the different types of treatment that the doctors may consider.

Once any treatment is given the doctors will monitor you with blood tests and scans to make sure that the treatment continues to be effective.

Survival is a difficult thing to predict and this is a question best answered by your doctors. A lot will depend on how you respond to any treatment that you are given and also your general health. The doctors will probably be able to give you more of an idea once your treatment has started and they can see how you respond.

Everyone responds to treatment in different ways.

You may find it helpful to read through the various links before you see the doctors so you have more of an idea as to what to expect.

If you can, do take someone with you to your first appointment as you will be given a lot of information to digest.

If you would like to go through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to ring us. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
