Transperineal biopsy of the prostate

I am very nervous of this procedure under local anaesthetic. Can anyone with experience reassure me and advise how bad the side effects are after the procedure.

Thanks

  • Hi Scorpio,

I had mine done and to be honest like you i was nervous, but the team of Doctors and Nurses were amazing. I had no side effects afterwards other than when i pooped out the lube they insert into you to get the probe in, came out like you have the squirts, but the doc pre warned me that that would happen. Good luck though

  • Thanks. Any pain during the procedure? No blood in the urine/semen?

Hope all worked out for you.

  • A bit of discomfort when they inject the prostate to numb it, plus the odd little discomfort from when the biopsy is taken, makes a click sound and some of them was like a shooting pain through my penis.

Bit of blood in urine a couple of days after, for about 2 days but in the semen lasted a bit longer but no pain at all

Thank you, but unluckily 9 of my 18 biopsies came back with cancer, gleason score of 7 diagnosed in May this year and have opted for the Radiotherapy treatment which should start in October, had my 2 weeks of pills and first 3 monthly Hormone Therapy Injection in July

  • Thank you for replying and I wish you all the best for your treatment.

  • No worries and good luck with your biopsy, you'll be fine

  • Hi Scorpio61 and thank you for your post.

It's understandable to feel scared about having a transperineal prostate biopsy.  Many people worry about the pain and discomfort they may feel.

I see that you have been given some good advice already from other forum members.

You usually have this biopsy in the outpatient department under local anaesthetic. Sometimes, people may have it in the operating theatre under a general anaesthetic. This is when they are asleep during the procedure.

If you are having a local anaesthetic this will numb the area  and this can help to minimise the pain. The staff will talk through your concerns if you are feeling anxious. Some patients may also receive a mild sedative to help them relax. While you may experience some pressure or mild discomfort, severe pain is uncommon.

This procedure is important for diagnosing prostate issues and can help guide the best treatment for you.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Hi Scorpio,

How did your biopsy go mate?

  • About as expected...more uncomfortable than painful...had an explosion expelling the jelly as you warned....blood in the urine and back passage for a week, still a little in the semen...now waiting on the results which can take 4 weeks.

Hope you're OK and radiotherapy starts soon.
