Barrett's and oesophageal cancer

Hi , I am new to the group and slightly confused. I have had two RFA treatments for barrett's oesophagus. I also have another scheduled procedure for a few months time. I have been told that there have been changes to cells in the oesophagus, hence the treatment. Does this signify first stage cancer. I'm unclear and looking for support .

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

RFA Ablation is a treatment used to treat abnormal cells (dysplasia). The aim is to remove these abnormal cells before they become cancer.

Often in Barretts oesophagus, the need arises to treat certain areas of the oesophagus, and this can mean repeated treatments to keep the condition under control. Maybe on your next visit, just talk this over with your hospital team who can hopefully explain this to you in more detail.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
