Lung cancer

I was deemed unsuitable for surgery due to having COPD. So I’ve had radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The tumour has shrunk but after only 3 of 12 doses of immunotherapy my consultant has stopped it due to my suffering bad side effects, colitis. My question is are there any other treatments available as my consultant is being rather vague. I’m to have another scan soon and he has said we will discuss things after that. Is it correct that the various therapies can still be having an effect even though I had my last radiotherapy in February?

so far I have had great faith in my consultant but since my problems with the immunotherapy he has seemed to be less confident in any treatment plan. I would like to know what options, if shy, might be available.

Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about the challenges you're facing with your treatment. It's understandable you wanting to know what other treatment options might be available to you.

As nurses we don't recommend treatment as we are not involved in your clinical care. We usually suggest speaking to your specialist team who are familiar with all your medical details. If you have a lung specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

We do have information on our website on how lung cancer may be treated which I hope you find useful.

The treatments you've had may continue to work in your body. This means that the tumour shrinkage possibly could continue, or may even stay stabilise for some time.

When you have your next scan, it will give your consultant more information to help decide what the next steps are.

I hope this reply helps a little. Give us a ring if you like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you for your answer, I fully understand that you should not suggest treatment without knowing all the details, it’s a very complicated disease isn’t it! I will look at the website in more detail.

    thanks again
