Swollen lymph nodes

Hello,

im looking for some advice regarding going back to my GP. I attended just over a week ago with lymph nodes that have been swollen for around 3 months. I didn’t go sooner because I thought I was just run down and they’d go away. I also have significant fatigue which has caused me to stop doing any activity outside of going to work and looking after my children. I used to go to the gym and weight lift 3-4 times a week but haven’t had the energy to go in about a month. I am also falling asleep on the sofa immediately after my children are in bed, and I’m sleeping around 9 hours a night. I’m still completely exhausted. I also have extreme itching to my lower legs and armpits, which I’ve tried all sorts of creams for with no joy.

I saw a nurse practitioner who felt them and told me to come back again if they don’t go away or get bigger. I had some bloods done which showed low ferritin, and a low eGFR of 67, which concerned me slightly as my previous kidney function had been fine. I eat well, drink plenty of water and get good sleep.

Should I be going back to the GP? Is there anything I should be asking to be done? I work in healthcare and don’t want to be a pushy patient but I am concerned about my symptoms.

Thank you!

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

You may well have had a viral infection as lymph nodes tend to respond by swelling, and can take some time to return back to normal. Often a few months.

There is NHS information about swollen glands.

As you have been told you have a low ferritin, this is probably behind most of your symptoms, such as fatigue etc.

So try to address this by boosting with iron rich foods, and/or iron supplements. Absorption is helped by taking a source of vitamin C at the same time. It can take several months to begin to improve a low ferritin level.

The nurse at the GP surgery gave you sensible advice. If you are still feeling under par, in a month or so, then check back with your GP about it.

    I hope this helps,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
