Distal sigmoid Colon tumour

Hello,

I was diagnosed with the above condition August 1.

The colonoscopy removed 5 other polyps.

The cancerous polyp is 5 cm in size.

It is located 15 cm from the anal verge.

Q.1 Does the size indicate an aggressive cancer?

Q.2 what likely treatment may I receive?

Q.3  Is it possible to be cancer free beyond treatment.

I am 59 male.

Many thanks

  • Hello Geddy-64 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can understand that you want as much information as you can get about your condition.

It is really only your doctors who are involved in your care who will be able to really tell you any more.

The cancerous polyp will be looked at under a microscope and the pathologist will be able to tell your doctors more about this once it has been analysed. Not only do they take in account the size of the polyp  they also look at how fast the cells are dividing.

Your case will be discussed with the doctors involved in your care and they will discuss your possible treatment options.

Try to take one step at a time. There is so much information that the doctors need to find out first before they can tell you more about your cancer. Any scans that you have will need to be reviewed. The doctors need to get a bigger picture before they decide how they will treat you.

There is some information about how treatment decisions are reached. Surgery may be your first line of treatment and then once the area of bowel is removed this will then be analysed again by the pathologist and the doctors will be able to decide whether you need any further treatment.

Every person is treated very individually and more and more tests are done on tissue that is removed making decisions that are right for that particular person.

I can understand how very frustrating it can be waiting to find out more but hopefully, over the next couple of weeks things will become clearer.

If you would like to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
