Choosing breast size following cancer removal mastectomy

I am having a single mastectomy in September. I am going to have the mastectomy and they will then reconstruct my breast using blood vessels, tissue, and muscle from my tummy. They are going to lift and reposition my other breast on the same day to match my reconstructed breast. I have been told to consider what size I would like to be. This is a very difficult decision. I am naturally a 34HH with natural sagging, but I wear good supportive bra and do enjoy being big busted. The plastic surgeon has said my breast will look more lifted and sit higher, so going up to a 34HH could look too much. I am considering going down to a 34D, but I am not sure if this would look too small. The surgeon said the bigger the size the more blood vessels and muscle they need to use from my tummy so I want to reduce the risk to that area following the operation.

Any advice about how breasts sit after reconstruction and how to judge sizes?? I m 48 and love dressing up, going out and feeling feminine, but don't want to look ridiculous lol. Thanks.

  • Hi Joanf, I too will be having the same surgery at the start of October. I'm a 36E at the moment and was told that they'd be a bit smaller after surgery, which I'm happy with. I too would like to hear other people's experience of this surgery. Hope all goes well in September and it would be great to hear from you regarding your recovery. I'm more worried about the recovery than the actual surgery. Xx

  • Thanks for reply. I would like to go a bit smaller, but just not sure by how much? I still want to feel like me, but not make my recovery harder. I know the most important thing is to remove the cancer and be healthy, but I also want to make a good decision for my body and recovery after. X I will keep you posted Pippin24 how things go.

  • Hello Joanf and thanks for your post,

This is a very personal decision so I would go back and discuss this with your surgeon and Breast Care nurse.

I would take in to account what the surgeon said about needing more blood vessels and muscle if you want  bigger breasts. If you have more tissue taken from your abdomen then your rate of recovery may take a bit longer.
