How to help a friend at an appointment to hear results of CT and MRI

I would like some advice on how to support a friend in a situation where she fears the worst.
Is it ok to record the meeting with the consultant?

what questions are good to ask?
what is the best support I can provide?

many thanks

  • Hello pemp and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your friend awaiting some test results that she is very worried about.

Without knowing what these results will have shown it is difficult to know what the best questions to ask will be.

Of course if an abnormality has been detected it would be useful to ask about what this means, and if any further tests are needed before a plan of treatment is made.

You usually need to ask the doctor permission before recording a consultation out of courtesy, but in my experience most doctors are happy with this.

Waiting for tests and results is an anxious time for most people and I am sure your friend knowing you are there with her at this time is support enough. We do have a section of information about supporting someone with cancer so do take a look at this if your friend is diagnosed.

I hope the appointment goes well.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Best wishes to you and your friend

    Naomi
