How often have you seen a positive FIT result not be cancer?

I had the news today that my FIT result has come back positive and I am being referred to hospital.

I am scared and need to know facts. Is it almost certain I have some form of bowel cancer?

Blood results were normal.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

It can be worrying to find out you have a positive FIT test but bleeding in the bowel can be caused by many different things, most that aren't cancer. Having said that when blood is found within a FIT test it is important this is investigated further to rule something more serious out, just to be on the safe side.

Usually a tiny camera is passed into the bowel, this procedure is called a colonoscopy that is able to look closely at any abnormality in the bowel. The doctor or nurse carrying out the test will usually take some biopsies (tissue samples) as well,  to be examined under a microscope at the same time.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

  • I am not a nurse, but from what I have read, about 10% of positive FIT tests are cancer, so the odds are still that you don't have cancer.
