Family appointment

My mum has been diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer this week and the hospital have asked for the family to attend an appointment next week. I’m unwell myself with a neurological disorder and stress triggers seizures & symptom's. I know they have not been honest with me and are only telling me the bare minimum. Can you tell me what this meeting will be for?? Is this the norm?? I just want to be prepared before I go so I know what to expect. Thank you for your help in advance.

  • Hello Shoola and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and can understand what a difficult time this must be for you and your family.

It is difficult to know what they are going to say about your mum without being involved in her care and I would hate to second guess what they are going to say.

It can be helpful to have all the family present particularly if they are finding out what support there is at home if they are talking about treatment or future plans for your mum. It can also help to have all the family present so everyone is put in the picture at the same time.

If you are concerned about your own health it maybe better if another member of your family can go in your place and then any conversation that does take place can be relayed to you after the consultation.

You may find it more helpful to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses.   The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
