Side effects of Head Radiotherapy

I am having a scalp (top centre) skin graft shortly after the recent removal of a 3cm agressive carcenoma, followed then by a course of Radiotherapy.

I am concerned about the side effects and possible brain damage  of the Radiotherapy in that area.

I am 81 yoa and otherwise in fair health but need information to help me decide if, at my age, I really want to go ahead (excuse the Pun) with the Radiotherapy Treatment.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Bluesman2304 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, I can understand it isn't easy to make a treatment decision.

The side effects you may experience will depend on the type of radiotherapy and the dose you are having. You may have something like superficial radiotherapy that is given for cancers that are on or close to the skin. This is given so that the treatment does not travel far into your body.

Your skin specialist would be the best person to discuss this with as they know your situation, and what exact treatment you will be having. They will be able to clarify whether or not there is a possibility of brain damage with radiotherapy.

The doctors will always weigh the benefits of treatment against any possible side effects and will do their best to avoid any problems such as brain damage. The main side effects of radiotherapy to the scalp area may include, skin irritation, hair loss to the area that is treated, the area of the skin treated may become, crusty and scab over. Bleeding at the site may occur or infection.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best
