  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your father in law's situation.

There are some things that might help for example antacid medication for the reflux. I think the main thing is for your father-in-law to let his doctors know how bad things are for him so they can try and help. If he is already having these medicines and they aren't helping they need to review his medication.

If the reflux is worse at night it might be a good idea for him to try and sleep in a more upright position.

I’m not sure what your father in law’s diet is like. If he managing to eat, it’s probably best for him to eat small frequent meals as this may help with the reflux. It’s better if he avoids large meals, and citrus or spicy foods as this can worsen reflux. Encourage him to sit upright for at least an hour after eating as this might reduce the reflux.

I hope your father in law’s symptoms improve soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
