One enlarged tonsil for 3 weeks.

Hi, 3 weeks ago I had a sudden sore throat come on. I felt dizzy and painful to swallow. I went the gp the following day and she said only one side was swollen but my heart/chest/back all sounded “fussy” so gave me antibiotics. A week later it was no better so I went back and saw a nurse. She told me I’m fine and it’s nothing they can do if the antibiotics didn’t work. It’s been over 3 weeks now. My tonsil is still very enlarged I feel like something is stuck in my throat all the time and I’m sure I can feel a pea sized lump in my kneck on the same side. The nurse has put me of going back so I’ve been avoiding it. Do I leave it and hope it just disappears? Or does it sound more sinister. I’m not in pain just uncomfortable with the swelling. Some days I can go without taking pain killers. It’s all on one side.
Thank you if you managed to read.

  • Hi Bear 567 and thank you for post.

Thank you for your enquiry. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It's disheartening when one negative experience hinders seeking advice.

I'm afraid we are unable to diagnose or tell you if anything is the matter. Symptoms can have straightforward medical explanations such as infection. But only a doctor can make a medical assessment so the best thing to do is to go back and ask to see your GP (not the nurse) if your symptoms are not improving. They will assess you and decide whether you need to go for tests.

The pea sized lump maybe a swollen lymph nodes  which can indicate an infection.

If you feel unable to go back to your GP surgery then you could visit an  Urgent care centre or Walk in centre; or you can call 111 for an assessment.

I hope you know more soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Thank you for getting back to me, I do feel reluctant on going back. Also feel I don’t want to waste their time in an urgent centre. But I will wait another week and if no improvement I will force myself to go back. Thanks again!
