Allergic reaction to Aldara

I was recently diagnosed with a superficial basal cell carcinoma and prescribed Aldara 5 cream, however I believe I've had a very bad reaction to the cream, blisters under my left eye, round my left nostril, in my mouth on my lips and red patches on left cheek. The spot being treated is to the left of my forehead.

Ive been to a London eye hospital who diagnosed viral conjunctivitis which my GP didn't agree and thought it may be ocular shingles. He referred me to an emergency eye clinic at my local hospital,  doctor there doesn't think its shingles, but prescribed antiviral antibiotics and antihistamines in case it is the cream.

My question is has anyone else had such an adverse reaction to Aldara 5 cream?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Aldara cream is usually well tolerated, but in theory, anyone (albeit unusual) could have a reaction to a certain drug or medication. We can't really comment on what your actually diagnosis is, as viral infections can present in different ways, and take their own time to settle down again.

You may have had a viral infection coincidentally at the same time, as using the cream, these things are not easy to know for sure.

Anyway, it seems that you have been prescribed medications to help, so these should speed up your recovery. Do let your prescribing doctor know.

    I hope this helps,
