Abdominal/Vaginal ultrasound

Can an ultrasound tell if a cancer has spread in the womb?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Ultrasound scans can help doctors see abnormalities in the womb such as fibroids or irregular tissue. If an abnormality is present a biopsy would usually be arranged at a later date to determine a diagnosis.

While an ultrasound scan is good at detecting the presence of a mass or tumour, they are not usually able to determine if a cancer has spread in or beyond the womb.

To determine if a cancer may have spread additional tests such as an MRI or CT scan are often needed.

When you get your results your doctor will tell you what needs to happen next ( if anything) as they have all your medical information.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
