Wide local excision

I’ve been told that I have to have a wide local excision to remove a sarcoma is this normal treatment ? Also how long is the recovery ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Yes, a wide local excision will take a margin of healthy tissue around it to ensure that there has been adequate clearance of the area involved. This will hopefully be confirmed from the resulting pathology report when it comes back.

Unfortunately, we can't be that specific about your recovery time. This will depend on various factors, such as where it is on the body. Your hospital team will outline this and give you clear after care advice after surgery. Most surgery will involve reduced physical activities for at least the first couple of weeks at home, and maybe longer. If you have contact details for a hospital clinical nurse specialist (CNS), then do ask them about this.

The UK charity Sarcoma UK provide useful information and support.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,
