Skin Cancer

I attended a colorectal clinic today . I had an mri/ct scan 2 weeks ago . The Dr today said that the cancer hadn’t spread which was great news . He performed a rectal examination and said I don’t have bowel cancer but in fact it was skin cancer .  This looks like a rash and is fairly near my Anus. He explained I will need surgery and possibly radiotherapy .
I would never have thought at the beginning of the year I would be glad to hear the news that I had skin cancer . He called it Squamous cell carcinoma . Has anyone got any experience of this treatment . Thanks for reading

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I imagine being told you have skin cancer after being suspected of having bowel cancer can cause mixed emotions.

Squamous cell cancer ( SCC) is a type of skin cancer that can appear in areas exposed to the sun. But it can also develop in less expected places as you've experienced.

SCC is usually very treatable especially when it has not spread and it sounds from what you've written yours hasn't . The treatment is often surgery to remove the cancerous tissue. Depending on the extent of the cancer radiotherapy might be suggested afterwards to ensure all the cancer cells are gone and to reduce the chances of it coming back. We have information on skin cancer on our website that may be helpful to you.
