Chemo fog.

Hi.  Just wondered if anyone had suggestions for coping with the fog that accompanies chemotherapy.  Is the tiredness mid afternoon caused by the same problem.  Thanks.

  • Hi TonRey and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you are experiencing and appreciate you wanting to know more.

Chemo brain or chemo fog is a condition that has been recognised by some researchers and doctors over the years. It is often referred to as cognitive impairment. Some patients have described having cognitive changes meaning changes in memory, concentration and the way a person is able to think. Doctors now think that these problems could be due to a variety of reasons, including the different cancer treatments and the cancer itself.

We have some tips on our website about managing brain fog which you may find helpful, also  Macmillan  has some tips on how to manage brain fog and loss of concentration.

I cannot tell you if your tiredness is also due to chemo fog. There can be many reasons for tiredness, such as anaemia.  Maybe you should consider discussing this with your specialist nurse or doctor to rule out other potential causes.

I hope this information helps.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
