Liver cancer cells more than liver cells. Colon cancer blocking digestive system

My Mum has been diagnosed with colon cancer and liver cancer. Her liver function is said to be low stopping her from doing an operation to open up her bowels so she can digest food. We are waiting on a biopsy of her liver (another 3 weeks) but what can be done? Both the liver and colon tumours are said to be big.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's condition. This must be a very difficult time for you both.

You ask what can be done for your mum. It is difficult for us to answer questions like this as we are not involved in her clinical care. Her specialist team are better placed to advise you on this as they are familiar with all her medical details. If your mum has a specialist nurse involved in her care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

When colon cancer spreads to the liver and affects liver function it can complicate treatment options. You can read more about possible treatment options on our website.

I’m not sure if your mum is being supported at home by a community palliative care team, often they are known as the Macmillan team. These specialist nurses and doctors are experts in controlling cancer symptoms. They can prescribe medications that may help with your mum's symptoms.  If she does not have a palliative care team involved in her care you could ask her GP to refer her.  You might also find it helpful to read our information about the support that is available to people at home with advanced bowel cancer on our website.

I hope this reply helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
