Constant headache since being diagnosed with inoperable grade 4 brain tumour in March

My husband has an inoperable grade 4 brain tumour.  He has had radiotherapy and three lots of chemotherapy tablets.  Since he was first diagnosed in March this year he has had a constant headache.  What is the best treatment please?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear of this ongoing headache. Sometimes doctors can prescribe low dose oral steroids to help reduce any brain swelling that may be there.

Pain medication such as codeine may help. Otherwise, methods that help distract someone from the headache, such as the use of listening to music as distraction, or aromatherapy vapours from a oil burner can help relax. Lavender oil in a fine mist can soothe. The use of a wrapped cool pack around the neck can help sometimes. Do always check first with his doctor though that this would be ok to do. If he has a hospital clinical nurse specialist (CNS) they may be able to suggest something.

I am sorry that we can't be of more specific help on this occasion.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
