Mass at the back of my eye

Hi

I need to reach out as I am very anxious so thank you for this.

I went for a routine eye test and my optician referred me to see a specialist. I went to see him and had an OCT scan which showed a mass at the back of my eye. He referred me to the hospital to have an eye ultrasound which I had done on 05.08.24 at the hospital.

I was told by the nurse that the reason I was having the ultrasound was an elevated lump with pigmentation. I now have to await the results after the Doctor has reviewed my images. I am petrified that it may be cancer. Cancer is rife in my close family younger brother passed with Melanoma of the skin, and my mum passed two years ago from x3 brain tumours and non Hodgkins Lymphoma.

I am 50 years old and have three adult children and 3 grandchildren. I am scared it was s going to be bad news.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are going through this worrying time. It's understandable to feel really anxious waiting for results to come through.

It's important to remember that not all lumps turn out to be cancerous. There are many other conditions that can cause similar findings and your specialist team are working to get the the right diagnosis so that they can treat you appropriately if needed.

Easier said than done but try and take one step at a time. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. Also try and focus on what you can control right now by eating a good diet, getting enough rest and do some gentle activities that you enjoy, The NHS website has some useful tips on breathing exercises for stress that you might find helpful.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
