Partial tongue removal and lymph node removal in neck

Four weeks ago I had the above procedure. In the last few days I have developed a sore throat on the same side as the op and also behind the drain wound in my throat. Is this normal. Also I have a foul metal taste in my mouth and dryness at night.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Following a partial tongue removal and lymph node dissection it's not uncommon to experience discomfort as your body heals. However, a sore throat and a metal taste in your mouth could indicate an infection.

It would be a good idea to let your specialist team know that you are having these symptoms. They can assess you and decide if you need to have any treatment such as antibiotics. If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope these symptoms improve soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
