Waiting for fine needle biopsy results of the thyroid

Please can you say approx how long results take and who gives me results the ent  surgeon or the gp

thankyou

  • Hi avemaria and thank you for posting,

It will depend on how urgent the biopsy results were requested. If you had an urgent referral you would generally expect the results between 2 and 4 weeks after the biopsy. It could be a shorter wait than this, or due to the pressures on the NHS at the moment, we are hearing of people who are waiting longer.

It is usually the consultant who will give you the results either in a letter, by telephone, or face to face.

If you are concerned that you are waiting too long for the results, you could speak with your GP as they may be able to chase them on your behalf.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.

    Yours sincerely,

    Jemma

back to square 1 m obviously really pleased it’s not cancer but I’m just left now with same symptoms . Still waiting for the results of the fine needle biopsy of thyroid .

  • Hi Avemaria,

Thank you for your further post,

It is good news that there are no signs of cancer, but I can appreciate it is difficult not knowing what the cause is of the symptoms you are having.

It might be worth having a discussion with your GP again and seeing if they have any explanation now cancer has been ruled out.

I hope you are not having to wait too long for the biopsy results of your thyroid and that will give you more information.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
