Lung cancer

Hi, my sister has been diagnosed with lung cancer she has a 5cm mass in one lung and small mass in other, she also has it in a lymph node, she has had 2 biopsies both failed so is having another one on Wednesday, they said the biopsy they got was necrotic, could someone explain this please, she is seeing consultant on Monday and we are wondering what questions we should ask, thank you for any help.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your sister's diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you all.

When her healthcare team said that the biopsy was necrotic, it means that the sample they took was made up of dead cells, Necrosis can happen when the tumour grows and outstrips its blood supply, causing parts of it to die.

I see that your sister is seeing her consultant today and you both may already be at the hospital. But if not, the following questions may be helpful to ask:

What type of lung cancer has she and what is stage ( extent) of it?

What other tests or scans are needed to know more about the cancer?

What are the treatment options and what are the potential side effects and risks of these treatments?

Are there any clinical trials that she may be eligible for?

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
